Monday, December 24th was a unique day at Full Range!  For the 2nd year, we have worked with the Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County to provide 2 swimmers with a $250 scholarship, called the Full Range Scholarship!  Founder, Mike McDevitt started the Full Range Scholarship in 2018 to give back, but that’s not all!  One of Mike’s passions is coaching and over 15 years have been dedicated to the sport of swimming.  From 2004-2009, Mike was dedicated to the development and growth of the Lansdowne YMCA Marlins swimming program. Drexel Hill, PA (June 30, 2018) – This July, we will be launching our new initiative, Full Range Focus!  Since 2014, it has been our goal to give back.  Initially, we had T-Shirts for various causes to bring awareness.  We had pink for Breast Cancer, green for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), and purple for Alzheimer’s Disease.  Now, we are taking our efforts to the next level! Starting tomorrow, we will have a different focus each month!  For July, our focus is Parkinson’s Disease and the Michael J. Fox Foundation. As a Physical or Occupational Therapist working with folks in their homes, we talk about falls on a daily basis.  We talk about the causes, the risk factors, the consequences, and how to prevent them.  This is a good approach; however, we are often talking to people who have had a fall (or two…) and understand what it feels like!  What would be great is if we had a global understanding of what falls are and how to identify risk factors and causes prior to them happening! Falls are in fact when someone hits the ground!  This is the general definition out there. But… That is NOT all!  When I talk about falls, I ask two questions: Have you fallen recently? Holidays are the best time of year for many things!  In general, you see people smiling, holding doors, saying hi, and just being a bit more pleasant!  But for many, they are also a time for memories that bring feelings of sadness, regret, grief, and emptiness, among other things! These emotions are the ones that emerge when someone feels alone.  This doesn’t mean that they don’t have friends or family, but like all of us, there are times that we are alone.  Some of us more than others.  The one group that gets caught in this the most is our older adults, our parents, grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc… that may spend a bit more time by themselves. LSVT Big (BIG) is a treatment technique used by Physical and Occupational Therapists to improve a person’s, ability to produce larger more normal movements with walking and activities of daily living.  It is more commonly known as a treatment strategy to help those folks who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a type of neurological movement disorder. It can affect a person’s ability to perform common everyday activities. People with PD can experience a wide range of symptoms, including those that impact movement (motor symptoms) and those that do not (non-motor symptoms). The most common motor symptoms of PD are tremors, stiffness, or rigidity of the muscles and a slowness in movement (bradykinesia). Because PD impacts a person’s movement center, a person with PD typically experiences a decrease in their ability to regulate their posture, balance, coordination, and walking.
